Z Crash on Touch Off – Ohmic Sensing
This issue typically means:
-
The ohmic sensor didn’t sense the material
-
Z was not zeroed properly
-
The material is rusty or poorly conductive
Rusty material must be damp to close the ohmic circuit and allow proper sensing.
Troubleshooting Checklist
1. Check the Ohmic Clip
-
The clip must contact the plasma tip shield, not the nozzle.
-
Test: Touch the torch tip to the metal. Input light 3 or 9 should come on:
-
Input 9 for 2021+ Star Lab models
-
Input 3 for older models
-
-
If input doesn’t light up, continue to next step.
2. Bypass the Clip to Test
-
Manually touch the ohmic wire to the metal.
-
If the input light works now, your clip is bent → Replace the clip.
3. Check the Feather Touch Module
-
Location:
-
On 2020+: Behind gantry (inside enclosure)
-
On 2019 and older: On top of the carriage reduction unit
-
-
Make sure the plug labeled "TIP / PLATE" is connected firmly.
4. Check AC Adaptor for Feather Touch
-
Thin black wire should connect to a small 2"x1"x2" AC adaptor
-
Plug this into a power strip, not the control box
-
A small LED should be ON at the connection point — if not, check plug
5. Check Plate-Side Wiring
-
Under the long-axis cable carrier, behind the motor
-
Look for a ground wire attached to a small bolt on the upright aluminum bridge mount
-
Make sure the bolt/wire is connected and not corroded
6. Replace Wire to the Tip
-
If all else fails, replace the first 12 inches of wire going to the torch tip
